Ian Shelley, born 28th January 1960, married to Gay, father of three children, five grandchildren, currently employed as a mechanical estimator for Closewood Ltd.
Began competing in motorsport in 1977 with his Ford Anglia doing 12 car rallies. Tried many other forms of motorsport: autograss, karting, autocross, rallying, but didn’t start rallycross until the late 90s in his Escort Mk 1 rally car. Was immediately bitten by the rallycross bug and set about writing the rules for stockhatch which became an overnight success. Later moved on to become clerk of the course and was involved in organising events, particularly at the then new rallycross circuit at Blyton.
Rallycross then had to take a back seat while Ian was concentrating on building up his plumbing and heating business.
Ian and Gay, eventually returned to motorsport with their Vauxhall Corsa rally car, but rallycross remained in Ian’s blood. The decision was made to return to rallycross and Ian set about building a 2 ltr 16v powered Ford Anglia for the retro series. Due to serious health issues the Anglia was never completed and was sold on (despite his wife’s advice not to sell).
Several year’s later, after much surgery, Ian felt well enough to return to motorsport and began looking for another car for rallycross (He deeply regretted selling the Anglia). A Vauxhall powered classic mini was found on an internet site as a project and the car was completed in May 2014, enabling Ian to compete in a few rounds of rallycross. The team continue with the development of the mini and have been ably assisted by local motor club friend, John Taylor.
Despite Ian’s physical disabilities and being registered disabled, continues to enjoy his motorsport and is looking forward to the
rest of the 2015 season.
